Exercise 14.1
A die is rolled. Let E be the event 'die shows 4' and F be the event 'die shows even number'. Are E and F mutually exclusive?
The sample space is S = {1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6}.
E = {4} (die shows 4).
F = {2, 4, 6} (die shows an even number).
For two events to be mutually exclusive, their intersection must be empty.
E ∩ F = {4} ∩ {2, 4, 6} = {4} ≠ φ.
Since E ∩ F ≠ φ, the events E and F are not mutually exclusive.
Answer: E and F are not mutually exclusive, since E ∩ F = {4} ≠ φ.
