Exercise 6.1
How many 3-digit numbers can be formed from the digits 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 assuming that (i) repetition of the digits is allowed? (ii) repetition of the digits is not allowed?
(i) With repetition allowed:
Each of the 3 places can be filled by any of the 5 digits.
By the multiplication principle, the number of 3-digit numbers = 5 × 5 × 5 = 125.
(ii) Without repetition:
The hundreds place can be filled in 5 ways. After choosing one digit, the tens place can be filled in 4 ways, and the units place in 3 ways.
By the multiplication principle, the number of 3-digit numbers = 5 × 4 × 3 = 60.
Answer: (i) 125, (ii) 60
