Let Us Enhance Our Learning

Ramesh, an 11-year-old boy, developed a few pimples on his face. His mother told him that this is because of ongoing biological changes in his body. (i) What could be the possible reasons for the development of these pimples on his face? (ii) What can he do to get some relief from these pimples?

(i) Reasons for pimples during adolescence:

Ramesh is 11 years old, which is the onset of adolescence (typically 10–19 years).

During adolescence, the body undergoes several biological changes including an increase in oily secretions from the skin.

These oily secretions can clog the skin pores and lead to infections, causing a skin condition called acne.

Acne manifests as small, reddish pimples, commonly visible on the face.

So the possible reason is: increased oily secretions from the skin during adolescence clog the pores and cause infections, resulting in pimples (acne).

(ii) Steps Ramesh can take for relief:

Keep the face clean by washing it regularly with water to remove excess oil and dirt from the skin pores.

Avoid touching or squeezing the pimples, as this can spread infection and worsen acne.

Maintain good personal hygiene overall.

If the condition persists or worsens, consult a doctor for appropriate medical advice.

The text notes that acne is a common occurrence during adolescent years and varies among individuals, so patience and proper hygiene are key.

Answer: (i) Increased oily secretions from the skin during adolescence clog pores, leading to acne/pimples. (ii) Keep the face clean by washing regularly, avoid squeezing pimples, maintain personal hygiene, and consult a doctor if needed.
