Overview

Summary

Environment is the place, people, things and nature that surround any living organism; it is a combination of natural phenomena (biotic and abiotic) and human-made phenomena such as roads, buildings and factories.

Environment encompasses everything that surrounds a living organism — a combination of natural and human-made phenomena. The natural environment is organised into four domains: lithosphere (the solid earth crust of rocks and minerals that provides land for agriculture and mineral wealth), hydrosphere (all water bodies including rivers, lakes, seas and oceans), atmosphere (the thin layer of air held by Earth's gravity that protects from the sun's harmful rays and governs weather and climate), and biosphere (the narrow zone where land, water and air interact to support plant and animal life). When living organisms interact with each other and with their physical and chemical surroundings, they form an ecosystem — which can be a rain forest, grassland, desert, lake, river, ocean or even a small pond. Human beings have progressively modified the environment, from domesticating animals and inventing the wheel to industrialisation and the information revolution, making a harmonious balance between natural and human environments essential.

Essentials

Key points & formulas

  1. 01Environment is a combination of natural and human-made phenomena; the word comes from the French 'Environer/Environner' meaning 'neighbourhood'.
  2. 02The natural environment has four domains: lithosphere (solid earth crust), hydrosphere (all water bodies), atmosphere (layer of air around the earth), and biosphere (narrow zone where land, water and air interact to support life).
  3. 03Lithosphere is the hard top layer of the earth made of rocks and minerals covered by soil; it provides forests, grasslands, agricultural land and is a source of mineral wealth.
  4. 04The atmosphere is held by Earth's gravitational force, protects us from the sun's harmful rays, consists of gases, dust and water vapour, and its changes produce changes in weather and climate.
  5. 05Biotic refers to the world of living organisms such as plants and animals; abiotic refers to the world of non-living elements such as land.
  6. 06An ecosystem is formed by the interaction of all living organisms with each other and with the physical and chemical factors of their environment, all linked by transfer of energy and material; examples include forests, deserts, lakes, rivers, oceans and ponds.
  7. 07Early humans adapted to nature; over time they learned to grow crops, domesticate animals, invented the wheel, developed the barter system, and later experienced the industrial revolution and the information revolution.
  8. 08World Environment Day is celebrated on 5 June every year.
Questions

Frequently asked questions

01

What is environment according to NCERT Class 7 Geography Chapter 1?

Environment is the place, people, things and nature that surround any living organism. It is a combination of natural and human-made phenomena. While the natural environment refers to biotic and abiotic conditions on the earth, human environment reveals the activities, creations and interactions among human beings.

02

What are the major components of the natural environment?

Land, water, air, plants and animals comprise the natural environment. These are organised into four domains: lithosphere, hydrosphere, atmosphere and biosphere.

03

What is lithosphere?

Lithosphere is the solid crust or the hard top layer of the earth. It is made up of rocks and minerals and covered by a thin layer of soil, with an irregular surface featuring landforms such as mountains, plateaus, plains and valleys. It provides forests, grasslands for grazing, land for agriculture and human settlements, and is a source of mineral wealth.

04

What is hydrosphere?

Hydrosphere is the domain of water. It comprises various sources of water and different types of water bodies like rivers, lakes, seas and oceans. It is essential for all living organisms.

05

What is atmosphere and what is its role?

The atmosphere is the thin layer of air that surrounds the earth, held in place by Earth's gravitational force. It protects us from the sun's harmful rays and scorching heat. It consists of gases, dust and water vapour, and changes in the atmosphere produce changes in weather and climate.

06

What is biosphere?

Biosphere is the plant and animal kingdom together — the living world. It is a narrow zone of the earth where land, water and air interact with each other to support life.

07

What is an ecosystem?

An ecosystem is a system formed by the interaction of all living organisms with each other and with the physical and chemical factors of the environment in which they live, all linked by transfer of energy and material. Examples include large rain forests, grasslands, deserts, mountains, lakes, rivers, oceans and even a small pond.

08

What is the difference between biotic and abiotic?

Biotic refers to the world of living organisms, for example plants and animals. Abiotic refers to the world of non-living elements, for example land.

09

What is the difference between natural environment and human environment?

The natural environment refers to both biotic and abiotic conditions existing on the earth. Human environment reveals the activities, creations and interactions among human beings, such as roads, buildings and factories.

10

How have human beings modified the environment over time?

Early humans adapted themselves to natural surroundings and fulfilled their requirements from nature. Over time, needs grew and humans learned to grow crops, domesticate animals and lead a settled life. The wheel was invented, surplus food was produced, the barter system emerged and trade started. The industrial revolution enabled large-scale production, transportation became faster, and the information revolution made communication easier and speedy across the world.

11

What is the barter system?

The barter system is a trade in which goods are exchanged without the use of money.

12

When is World Environment Day celebrated?

World Environment Day is celebrated on 5 June every year.

13

What is the origin of the word 'environment'?

The word 'environment' comes from the French word 'Environer' or 'Environner' which means 'neighbourhood'.
