The National War Memorial is a tribute to the brave men and women who have served in the Indian Armed Forces since Independence. It ensures that the nation never forgets the cost of freedom.
It has 29,000 tablets (bricks) bearing the names of over 26,000 fallen soldiers who gave their lives in wars including the Indo-China conflict of 1962, the Indo-Pak Wars of 1965 and 1971, and the Kargil War of 1999.
The memorial also houses the Amar Jawan Jyoti (the eternal flame), bronze and stone murals depicting battle actions, and four concentric circles (Amar Chakra, Veerta Chakra, Tyag Chakra, Raksha Chakra) symbolising immortality, bravery, sacrifice, and protection respectively.
It reminds citizens of the pain and horrors of war, motivates them to live lives worthy of the soldiers' sacrifices, and keeps the memory of fallen heroes alive for future generations.
