3 questions from Dual Nature of Radiation and Matter, solved step by step.

Exercises

Find the (a) maximum frequency, and (b) minimum wavelength of X-rays produced by 30 kV electrons.

Given: Accelerating potential V = 30 kV = 30 × 10³ V

Constants: h = 6.63 × 10⁻³⁴ J s, c = 3 × 10⁸ m/s, e = 1.6 × 10⁻¹⁹ C

When an electron is accelerated through potential V, it gains kinetic energy eV. This energy is entirely converted into photon energy at maximum (shortest wavelength, highest frequency).

(a) Maximum frequency:

eV = h × nu_max

nu_max = eV / h = (1.6 × 10⁻¹⁹ × 30 × 10³) / (6.63 × 10⁻³⁴)

nu_max = (4.8 × 10⁻¹⁵) / (6.63 × 10⁻³⁴)

nu_max = 7.24 × 10¹⁸ Hz

(b) Minimum wavelength:

lambda_min = c / nu_max = hc / (eV)

lambda_min = (6.63 × 10⁻³⁴ × 3 × 10⁸) / (1.6 × 10⁻¹⁹ × 30 × 10³)

lambda_min = (1.989 × 10⁻²⁵) / (4.8 × 10⁻¹⁵)

lambda_min = 4.14 × 10⁻¹¹ m = 0.0414 nm

Answer: (a) nu_max = 7.24 × 10¹⁸ Hz; (b) lambda_min = 4.14 × 10⁻¹¹ m (0.0414 nm)

Exercises

The photoelectric cut-off voltage in a certain experiment is 1.5 V. What is the maximum kinetic energy of photoelectrons emitted?

Given: Stopping (cut-off) potential V₀ = 1.5 V

Constant: e = 1.6 × 10⁻¹⁹ C

The stopping potential equals the maximum kinetic energy of emitted photoelectrons:

K_max = e × V₀

K_max = 1.6 × 10⁻¹⁹ × 1.5

K_max = 2.4 × 10⁻¹⁹ J = 1.5 eV

Answer: K_max = 2.4 × 10⁻¹⁹ J = 1.5 eV

Exercises

The threshold frequency for a certain metal is 3.3 × 10¹⁴ Hz. If light of frequency 8.2 × 10¹⁴ Hz is incident on the metal, predict the cut-off voltage for the photoelectric emission.

Given: Threshold frequency nu₀ = 3.3 × 10¹⁴ Hz

Incident frequency nu = 8.2 × 10¹⁴ Hz

Constants: h = 6.63 × 10⁻³⁴ J s, e = 1.6 × 10⁻¹⁹ C

The maximum kinetic energy of photoelectrons:

K_max = h(nu - nu₀) = 6.63 × 10⁻³⁴ × (8.2 - 3.3) × 10¹⁴

K_max = 6.63 × 10⁻³⁴ × 4.9 × 10¹⁴ = 3.249 × 10⁻¹⁹ J

Cut-off (stopping) potential:

V₀ = K_max / e = 3.249 × 10⁻¹⁹ / 1.6 × 10⁻¹⁹

V₀ = 2.03 V

Answer: Cut-off voltage V₀ = 2.03 V
