A 1.0 m long metallic rod is rotated with an angular frequency of 400 rad s⁻¹ about an axis normal to the rod passing through its one end. The other end of the rod is in contact with a circular metallic ring. A constant and uniform magnetic field of 0.5 T parallel to the axis exists everywhere. Calculate the emf developed between the centre and the ring.
Given:
Length of rod: L = 1.0 m
Angular frequency: ω = 400 rad/s
Magnetic field: B = 0.5 T (parallel to the axis of rotation)
The rod rotates about one end. Each element dr of the rod at distance r from the pivot
moves with speed v = ωr perpendicular to B.
The motional emf across element dr: dε = B × v × dr = B × ω × r × dr
Total emf from centre (r = 0) to ring (r = L):
ε = ∫₀^L B ω r dr = B ω × [r²/2]₀^L = (1/2) B ω L²
Substituting values:
ε = (1/2) × 0.5 × 400 × (1.0)²
ε = (1/2) × 0.5 × 400 × 1.0
ε = 100 V
Answer: emf = 100 V
