A spring balance has a scale that reads from 0 to 50 kg. The length of the scale is 20 cm. A body suspended from this balance, when displaced and released, oscillates with a period of 0.6 s. What is the weight of the body?
Given: Scale range 0–50 kg, length of scale = 20 cm = 0.20 m, period T = 0.6 s.
Step 1: Find the spring constant k.
Maximum load = 50 kg, which produces maximum extension = 0.20 m.
Using Hooke's law: F = kx
k = F/x = (50 × 9.8) N / 0.20 m = 490/0.20 = 2450 N m⁻¹
Step 2: Find the mass m of the oscillating body.
Period: T = 2π √(m/k)
⇒ m = k T² / (4π²)
= 2450 × (0.6)² / (4π²)
= 2450 × 0.36 / 39.478
= 882.0 / 39.478
= 22.34 kg
Step 3: Find weight.
W = mg = 22.34 × 9.8 = 218.9 N ≈ 219 N
Answer: Weight of the body ≈ 219 N (mass ≈ 22.3 kg).
