Exercises
State, for each of the following physical quantities, if it is a scalar or a vector: volume, mass, speed, acceleration, density, number of moles, velocity, angular frequency, displacement, angular velocity.
A scalar has magnitude only; a vector has both magnitude and direction.
Volume — scalar (no direction associated with it)
Mass — scalar
Speed — scalar (magnitude of velocity, no direction)
Acceleration — vector (has both magnitude and direction)
Density — scalar
Number of moles — scalar
Velocity — vector
Angular frequency (ω) — scalar (it is the magnitude of angular velocity)
Displacement — vector
Angular velocity — vector (direction given by the right-hand rule along the axis of rotation)
Answer: Scalars: volume, mass, speed, density, number of moles, angular frequency. Vectors: acceleration, velocity, displacement, angular velocity.
