Exercises
Calculate the molar mass of the following: (i) H₂O (ii) CO₂ (iii) CH₄
Atomic masses used: H = 1.008 u, C = 12.011 u, O = 15.999 u
(i) Molar mass of H₂O
= 2 × 1.008 + 1 × 15.999
= 2.016 + 15.999
= 18.015 g mol⁻¹
(ii) Molar mass of CO₂
= 1 × 12.011 + 2 × 15.999
= 12.011 + 31.998
= 44.009 g mol⁻¹
(iii) Molar mass of CH₄
= 1 × 12.011 + 4 × 1.008
= 12.011 + 4.032
= 16.043 g mol⁻¹
Answer: (i) H₂O: 18.015 g mol⁻¹ (ii) CO₂: 44.009 g mol⁻¹ (iii) CH₄: 16.043 g mol⁻¹
